Queensland wins Presidents Cup - record 5 in a row!
|
Queensland has found success, coming away from the 2010 Australian Junior Volleyball Championships as Champion State and bringing home the Presidents Cup for a record 5th year in a row. The only other state to come close to achieving this was Victoria, who won from 2001 to 2004.
It was an eventful week in Perth, with what could only be described as crazy and sometimes cyclonic weather. We are happy to report that U17 Mens player Stuart Ereaut did in fact make it to perth in time for the competition, despite still being grounded in New Zealand when the rest of the Queensland team was departing Brisbane! Our trip report could also not go without a mention of the very special bus that our U17 Women had for the duration of the tour. It was hard not to see them coming with the lights and flags decorating their designated mode of transport!
Volleyball Queensland would like to congratulate all the athletes and coaching staff for their hard work and dedication, put in during both training and throughout the Championships. As Head of Delegation, Kate Grills would like to thank the athletes for their show of professionalism and exemplary behaviour whilst representing Queensland in Perth.
In particular, congratulations must go to the teams whose efforts resulted in medal placings within their age groups, especially the U17 Women who finished the tournament undefeated in nine matches with an impressive 27-1 set score. All individual results for the QLD teams are as follows;
|
- U21 Men - 1st (5 teams)
- U21 Women - 5th (5 teams)
- U19 Men Maroon - 1st (9 teams)
- U19 Men White - 7th (9 teams)
- U19 Women - 1st (6 teams)
- U17 Men Maroon - 3rd (11 teams)
- U17 Men White - 8th (11 teams)
- U17 Women Maroon - 1st (11teams)
- U17 Women White - 10th (11 teams)
The individual talent and skill of the following Queensland players were also recognised, as they were awarded "All Star 7" status;
- Nikala Cunningham (U17 Women)
- Jess Ngauamo (U17 Women)
- Madeleine Clarke (U17 Women)
- Thomas Menzies (U17 Men)
- Brad Millers (U17 Men)

Australian Men's Indoor team defeat Canada in Brisbane
|
The first match of the 2010 Indoor Volleyball friendly series between the national men's teams from Australian and Canada was held on Thursday, June 24 at the recently opened Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre.
A sold out crowd of 1600 packed the grandstands to cheer on the Aussie team in the first international volleyball match held in Brisbane since 2006.
It was a scrappy match at times, with Australia recording a few early errors in the first set before firing back with strong defence and steady attack from the back court to finish it. Canada came out with a promising start to the second set but it was not enough to combat the Aussie force, with the Australian team taking both the second and third sets to win the match. The final score at the end of the night was 3:0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22). The Canadian men's team completed their tour at the beginning of July, after playing three more matches across the country and leveling the friendly series against Volleyball Team Australia at 2-2.
The Australian Men's Volleyball Team will next compete at the Asian Cup in Iran, in August, before heading to Italy for the 2010 FIVB Men's World Championships in September and October.
Volleyball Queensland would like to thank Volleyball Australia, Logan City Council, the staff at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre, our corporate sponsors Borgeaud & Co, as well as all the volunteers who assisted on the night - we could not have done it without you!
A full match report can be found on the AVF Website and pictures from the night are available here.

Clock is ticking as Senior Schools Cup draws closer
|
The 2010 Senior Schools Cup is set to become the biggest in Volleyball Queensland's history as a record number of teams have registered their nominations to compete in August. With just under three weeks until the beginning of the competition, athletes are busy putting in extra training sessions and coaches are making final preparations for the teams who'll travel to Toowoomba to contest the Cup.
Results in 2009 saw Harristown State High School finish as both Champion Honours and Champion Aggregate School. Will they be able to retain these titles, or will reputable volleyball schools, Craigslea State High or Mountain Creek State High, upset the defenders?? All will have to wait and see on the big weekend.
An important reminder for all schools participating at Seniors that ALL team lists are due on Wednesday 21st July. Nomination payments for ALL teams must also be paid by this date.
Any queries regarding team lists or payments should be forwarded to Tournament Director, Kate Grills on om@qva.org.au.
